Ask Mr. Vitamin was born from that basic desire; to help people with what I know. Ask Mr. Vitamin started out as a simple Question & Answer column in my stores monthly newsletter. It soon grew to a published column in health and fitness magazines. It is now growing again into an honest and integrity based brand. When you see the AMV brand or logo you can know that your not getting a bunch of biased nonsense."

A VITAMIN - IS A VITAMIN...RIGHT?
Q. Every time I go into a health food store I see "Whole Food Vitamins." I was a chemical biology major in college and one of the first thing we learned is that the chemical structure of a vitamin is the same whether it is derived from nature or chemically synthesized. It just seems like health food stores are taking advantage of peoples naivety.
Frank K.
A. You are absolutely right...vitamin C is -ascorbic acid- whether you derive it from an orange or from a chemical recipe. However, there is strong evidence showing that vitamin C derived from an orange (natural source) is far more bio-available and absorbable within your blood stream than the same vitamin C derived from coal tar (common, inexpensive, synthetic raw material).
The other area of discrepancy between synthetic vs. natural vitamins is elemental or trace element content. Synthetic nutrients have virtually no "extra" food elements or trace elements. Nutrients derived from whole foods are usually rich in these food elements. Researcher seem to agree that these "minor" food elements help your body make better use of the major nutrient such as your vitamin C.
Any health food store worth its salt should know these vitamin (biology) basics. Whole food derived vitamins are usually more expensive. At least you know that you are getting your monies worth and not just making expensive urine.

NATURAL SUGAR…OK FOR DIABETICS?
Q. A few years ago I was diagnosed as pre-diabetic. Would the natural sugars that the health food store sells be ok?
Jim M.
A. Usually a “pre” diabetic diagnosis means you are a type 2 diabetic. This is a good thing…type 2 diabetics have far greater control through diet and exercise. It would be wise for you to avoid all refined carbohydrates (sugars) such as candy, deserts, white flour pastas, white rice etc. Your consumption of “natural” sugars needs to be very guarded. In other words, you need to be very careful of your natural sugar intake. Your pancreas probably isn't producing as much insulin as it should. True “natural” sugars are digested slightly slower and have higher mineral value; therefore your insulin can probably keep up with your natural sugar intake more efficiently.
Be careful, sugar today goes by many names (see poster). Sugar is still sugar any way you slice it. Normal folks can handle it OK. Diabetics and “pre” diabetics need to be aware and very careful.

RIPE BANANA KILLS TUMORS???
Q. I noticed in a previous post you recommended eating bananas to help a guy’s hangover. I was told that a banana was one of the worst fruits to eat for nutrition. Any thoughts?
Stephanie P.
A. The buzz on bananas seems to be dependent on which way the wind blows. In other words…whoever is paying for the research seems to get the facts bent in their favor. The carbohydrates are a bit high and the fiber is a bit low, but over all, the occasional banana is still a much better snack choice than any candy bar. One of the consistencies of all banana research is its unusually high (naturally occurring) levels of potassium. This high potassium content was my source for the guy with the hang over. See AMV Facebook post dated Feb. 11th.
Some recent research is showing that spotted bananas (the ones we throw out) may have a tumor inhibiting factor. Obviously more research needs to be done to substantiate this claim. Nonetheless, I don’t known about you but I am sure going to look at spotted bananas in a whole different light.

WHY DO HEALTH FOOD STORES STINK?
Q. What do you think of essential oils? It seems like every boutique store I go into has its own distinctive odor. Even health food stores have their own weird smell. My kids hate to go into any health food store; they end up holding their noses while I shop.
Gloria M.
A. Businesses have learned that smell can affect a buyer’s mood. Certain smells will make shoppers feel good about themselves and therefore tend to spend more. Recent research is showing that olfactory (through the nose) smell can have a powerful effect on our mood, energy level and even appetite.
Many health food stores have an abundance of bulk foods. Some of these bulk items are very pungent. Nutritional yeast, soy protein and lecithin granules are just a few of the products with the strongest odor. Combine this with the mix of odors coming from the bulk spice rack the essential oil rack, the vitamin section (many vitamin supplements are derived from yeast) and possibly fresh produce and you have a pretty pungent mix of odors wafting around a health food store.

COMMON KITCHEN SPICE...CURES MACULAR DEGENERATION!!!...
Q. I have just been diagnosed with macular degeneration. My Dr. wants me to start taking several meds. for my eyes. The good thing is I'm catching it early. Any suggestions if I decide to try natural foods and supplements?
Nancy S.
A. I really don't mean to throw around the "cure" word flippantly. A true "cure" for any disease would need to be studied extensively and exhaustive. You are very wise to first of all catch this disease early. Also, your timing couldn't be better in relation to recent, alternative research.
Recent, double blind, cross over, time weighted research out of Australia has found the common kitchen herb SAFFRON (a bit pricey) to have a -huge- effect in actually healing...not just preventing macular degeneration. Check out this excerpt from the main article:
" The whole study was six months long, so each side of the 25 double blind subjects had three months of improved vision with three months of impaired vision. All 25 were tested for neuron electrical conductivity in the macula and retina, and 23 showed significant improvement..."
SAFFRON herb capsules can be found in most health food stores. Many herbal supplement manufacturers will undoubtedly begin blending this herb in targeted nutrient formulations for vision health. Inform your doctor so your progression can be monitored and documented. Keep me informed.

CIGARETTE SMOKE CAN CAUSE SINUS PROBLEMS!
Q. I think I have a sinus problem due to cigarette smoke at a client’s house? My forehead hurts and feels stuffy but no drainage. I know you are not a doctor but I just thought you might be able to suggest something. Any ideas what might help? I can't do anything with orange in it.
Thank You!
Karen T.
A. As you are probably well aware we are entering the time of year when sinus and sinusitis sufferers are miserable. Cigarette smoke can only make it worse. Breathing in second hand cigarette smoke can cause certain (cranial) blood vessels to constrict. These vessels need to relax and you should cleanse the sinuses. Consider the following:
1. Natures Plus InflamActin: A fast acting, herbal and nutrient based anti-inflammatory capsule. If you can’t find this brand then go with a high potency turmeric capsule.
2. Netti Pot: This takes a little practice getting used to but works so well. The saline solution (special salt water) cleanses the sinuses and can even help your body re-build a healthy mucous cell wall.
Orange or orange extract should not be in either recommendation.

JOINT SORENESS IS A PAIN…EVERYWHERE!
Q. I am 44 yrs. old and love to ride bike and swim. Lately, my knees and elbows have been hurting! What will keep me moving without breaking the bank?
Shelly M. S.
A. The last time I wrote about joint pain, I talked about Glucosamine Sulfate and related products. I am still sold on long term usage of “QUALITY” Glucosamine combined with synergistic, complementary products. I know it is somewhat controversial but I've seen it work exceptionally well, too many times to doubt the efficacy and results. The following are some product recommendations with and without Glucosamine that will keep you on your bike and won’t break the bank:
1. Buried Treasure JOINT EASE: This is a liquid (16 oz) Glucosamine formula containing over 13 powerful ingredients. It’s an effective liquid base containing important minerals to promote joint mobility and connective tissue re-building. Sells for between $25.-$35. per bottle.
2. Bio Nutrition JOINT WELLNESS: This has no Glucosamine in the formula. They use Type 2 Collagen as a formulation base. This is designed to strengthen ligaments and tendons, reduce pain and discomfort caused by inflammation. 60 caps. sell for between $29.-$35. per bottle.
3. Tiger Balm PAIN RELIEVING PATCH: This is a ventilated, hydrogel patch designed for long lasting release and comfort. This is a topically applied analgesic patch that sticks to the applied area. This has either 4 or 5 patches per box and sells for between $6.-$9.
While at home follow these up with frequent ice packs applied to the aching joint. I would do either #1 or #2 (not both at same time) and use #3 anytime.

NATURAL HELPS FOR KILLER HANG OVER!
Q. It's Monday and I am hung over so bad from the weekend, I can't hardly stand it. I am desperate! Any natural stuff that would help?
P.S. I will never, EVER drink again!
Michael T.
A. While abstinence from alcohol will help. To get you feeling better immediately try the following foods.
1. BANANAS: Usually alcohol "over" consumption causes electrolyte depletion. In other words...you've peed out all of your good minerals. The potassium in a banana will begin the electrolyte replacement process.
2. GINGER ROOT TEA: Chances are your head is pounding and your nauseated. Ginger tea will settle and soothe your stomach. Ginger's anti-inflammatory properties will ease the headache. Don't chug it down. Sip the tea slowly and relax.
3. PINEAPPLE: Pineapple is amazing. The bromelain (a protein digestive enzyme) will act as a powerful anti-inflammatory. The fluid in pineapple is loaded with minerals and healthy sugars.
I know you've probably been told this before, but from this point on discipline and moderation needs to be your M.O. (modus operandi) or method of operation. Hang in there...no pun intended.

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR…GOOD FOR WHAT?
Q. My Grandmother took apple cider vinegar most of her life. I have to admit she rarely got sick and always stayed thin. Do you think it was the vinegar or just her constitution?
Alanzo A.
A. Gramma was a wise woman and her lifetime of good health could certainly be attributed to Apple Cider Vinegar. For the majority of the 38 years I was in the natural food business Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) was always one of the top 10 selling items in the entire store. Its history of medicinal use goes back into ancient Greece where Hippocrates was recorded as using ACV to treat patients. Its popularity continues ever stronger today fueled by the fact that it works. ACV’s ability to stabilize our body’s acid alkaline balance opens the door to a whole host of benefits. Here are the top 10 benefits:
Source: wikipedia.com
Anti-inflammatory:
• The anti-inflammatory properties of apple cider vinegar work to help internal inflammation within the gastrointestinal tract when added to salads or taken diluted with water.
• Aids with weight loss:
• By regulating blood sugar levels, apple cider vinegar also assists in weight loss. Insulin will not direct sugar to be stored as fat
• Clears skin:
• Apple cider vinegar is astringent and is an antiseptic. It helps with acne and pimples.
• Gets rid of dandruff:
• The fungus Malassezia furfur, which causes dandruff, is eradicated by the antifungal properties of apple cider vinegar.
• Helps with Arthritis:
• Apple cider vinegar has potent anti-inflammatory properties and helps with pain of the joints.
• Lowers glucose in diabetics:
• Apple cider vinegar contains acetic acid, which can slow down starch digestion. This will help lower glucose levels in the bloodstream.
• Lowers bad cholesterol:
• The presence of pectin in apple cider vinegar helps reduce bad cholesterol in the body.
• Rich in minerals:
• Potassium, magnesium and many other minerals are in apple cider vinegar. Potassium controls the water balance in the body. Magnesium helps with digestion.
• Protects against cancer:
• Apple cider vinegar contains beta-carotene, which according to the Mayo Clinic possesses antioxidant properties that counteract damage caused by free radicals. ACV protect against cancer and boost the immune system.
• Yeast Infection:
• Apple cider vinegar reduces yeast infections in women by adding 2 tbsp. of the vinegar to a douche. This remedy should be taken with caution.
Always buy “organic” ACV and make sure the “mother” or sediment is still in the mix. The “mother” looks like a cloud in the liquid and it’s where most of the nutrient (vites. and minerals) are held in the mixture. ACV should be amber in color, always refrigerate after opening and shake well before every use.
